Avey Tare’s Slasher House: Enter the Slasher House review – hit-and-miss Animal Collective side-project

Avey Tare's new solo album is not so far from Animal Collective's weird, hazy art-pop, but it's a mixed bag, writes Lanre Bakare

As part of Animal Collective for the last 15 years, Avey Tare has helped to reimagine pop music; covering it with countless layers of avant-garde innovation. While Tare's band mate Noah Lennox took his Panda Bear solo project down avenues that saw him apply minimal techno's song structure to pop (and possibly sample the Lion King on his latest track Marijuana Makes My Day), Tare has ploughed a furrow much closer to his work with the Baltimore group. Indeed, at times, Enter the Slasher House feels like a carbon copy of Animal Collective, replete with effects-soaked hazy vocals mashed against high-tempo art-pop. That's not neccesarily a bad thing – Duplex Trip, for example, is full of strangely infectious hooks and refrains – but at times you can't help but feel you've heard it done better before. Things get more interesting when Tare shows off his more straightforward songwriting chops, as on Little Fang, wherein he swaps the effects pedals for clearly defined basslines, almost decipherable lyrics and something approaching a conventional tune.
