Austrian electronic duo Klangkarussell are shooting for the big time. To get there, Tobias Rieser and Adrian Held wield a mixed bag of dance music styles, pulling from house, ambient electro and drum'n'bass. The result makes for a meandering and somewhat undefined listen. Though rumours have swirled in YouTube comments sections that Rieser and Held crafted their 2012 breakout single Sonnentanz from a "music construction kit", its popularity still landed them a major label deal. They crank out songs ideal for summer-hit status, perhaps aiming to sound like Gui Boratto but landing closer to Simian Mobile Disco or Disclosure's pop-house. Few of the songs here clock in under six minutes, and though Berlin and Celebrate interestingly hark back to noughties acts such as Fake Blood, Klangkarussell sound best when they ditch the vocalists (besides the robotic female voice on We Want Your Soul – she can stay) and opt for dynamic instrumental builds rather than Avicii-like EDM.
