■ Shakespeare in Love
John Madden's movie, co-penned by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, won seven Oscars. Can this version repeat the feat with Oliviers? While it may not boast Judi Dench and Gwyneth Paltrow, it does have Lee Hall – the powerhouse writer behind the stage version of Billy Elliott.
Noel Coward Theatre, London (0844 482 5141), booking until 25 October

■ Malevich
With his iconic Black Square of 1915, Kazimir Malevich liberated art from the shackles of representation. A century later, Tate Modern hosts the first major survey of his art for 25 years – minus the square, too fragile to move from Moscow – but replete with paintings, sculptures and drawings by the Russian revolutionary.
Tate Modern, London (020-7887 8888), 16 July - 26 October.

■ Boomtown Rats
It's not been a happy year for the Geldof family but the ever resilient Bob continues to play with his band, who have added a string of dates to their Ratlife tour this October. Playing live has been "cathartic" following the death of his daughter Peaches, says Geldof, and his many festival appearances seem to prove it.
Guilfest, Guildford, on 18 July, then touring UK to 7 November (0844 844 0444)

■ A Handful of Stars
Boyzone's Keith Duffy does himself proud in this revival of Billy Roche's 1988 play but it's Ciaran Owens as a human molotov cocktail who takes centre stage. Transferring from the tiny Theatre 503, this powerful story of a life without prospects or tenderness packs new punch. If you enjoyed The Weir, you must see this.
Trafalgar Studios 2, London (0845 505 8500), until 25 July.
