Australian psychedelia: John Steel Singers Photograph: PR

Could it be Australia's immunity to the great 21st-century global recession that has produced this seemingly unending wave of sun-dappled psychedelia? The John Steel Singers, from Brisbane, follow the likes of Tame Impala and Pond in sounding like they don't have a care in the world bar, perhaps, when they're going to run out of weed. But there's a poppy zest to Everything's a Thread that stops it being just stoned slackerdom. On Happy Before and Lambs, bass and drums are precise and propulsive – they could have been taken from a Duran Duran record – anchoring the dreaminess on top. Never Read Tolstoy and State of Unrest, meanwhile, are more conventionally fuzzy psyche of the kind that has got people in cuban-heeled Chelsea boots excited for decades. Everything's a Thread sounds at first like something slightly drippy and nondescript, but the more you listen, the more it pulls into focus as a fabulous soundtrack for a heatwave.
