Rod Stewart, Susan Boyle and Kylie Minogue will perform at the opening and closing ceremonies for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which begin later this month.

Stewart, 69, whose father was Scottish, and Britain's Got Talent finalist Boyle, originally from West Lothian, will sing for an expected crowd of 40,000 at Celtic Park on 23 July.

The chief executive of Glasgow 2014, David Grevemberg, said the announcement would take "excitement and anticipation to a whole new level".

With an estimated global television audience of around one billion people, the opening event will showcase Scottish talents including the singer-songwriter Amy Macdonald, violinist Nicola Benedetti and Gaelic-language singer Julie Fowlis.

Organisers also announced that Kylie Minogue was scheduled to perform a five-song set as part of the closing celebrations at the revamped Hampden stadium on 3 August.

The Antipodean singer will link Glasgow with the host of the 2018 Games, Australia's Gold Coast.
