Those who like some genteel orderliness mixed in with their punky improv jazz should appreciate Trio Riot's approach, writes John Fordham

Trio Riot are British tenor saxophonist Sam Andreae, Danish alto-saxist Mette Rasmussen and Swiss drummer David Meier. They share improv, jazz, rock and classical experiences, apparent in the mix of free-jazz squalling, punky thrashing and sometimes unexpectedly genteel orderliness of their music. Rawness and control are in immediate evidence on the snappy drumwork and warbling, wriggling sax of the opener, 3; Lala-Lala is almost amiably jaunty; and Rondeau opens up their classical vocabulary. Bartstock is a coolly phrased feature with Bartok references, Duo is a slow, two-sax trance fitfully interrupted by brittle exclamations, and the cover of Joy Division's Disorder an affectionate stomp. Trio Riot are not quite as unkempt as their name, but for those who like a little more poise and symmetry with their improv, they might be just the ticket.
