Celebrated for her bright vocals and unflinching social eye, the Scots folk singer broadens her musical boundaries on this fifth album, with producer Iain Cook bringing orchestral flourishes to her acutely observed songs. Cover Your Eyes takes aim at Donald Trump's Aberdeen golf course, promising the revenge of the haar (sea fog) for his defilement and "crooked heart". The St Paul's protest camp is celebrated on King of Birds, neatly allying the wren and Christopher Wren, and there are ruminations on Darwin, family death and a murdered schoolgirl. Potentially clumsy topics all, but Polwart's poetic grace and vocal conviction win out.
