Pete Williams: See – review

The debut solo album by Dexys bassist Pete Williams is an unexpected treat, says Phil Mongredien

It seems strange that singer-songwriter and Dexys Midnight Runners bassist Pete Williams should only now be releasing his first solo album, more than 30 years into his career – the warm, engaging songs here suggest he perhaps ought to have done so sooner. Strong storytelling underpins the best moments, not least Are You Listening?, a moving message to his father, and opener Reconsider This. The subtle and restrained backing, including Richard Hawley on guitar, helps, allowing Williams's voice to take centre stage (he sounds eerily similar to Kevin Rowland on the more emotive numbers). Let's hope the follow-up doesn't take so long to make.
