Brits 2012: the red carpet

Sure, they're not the Oscars. They aren't even the Baftas. But the Brit awards have their very own red carpet, and the stars did their duty by posing upon in it. From Kylie Minogue to Little Mix, Ed Sheeran to Adele, Rosie Swash gives her verdict on the outfits that got an outing on the biggest night in the pop calendar

Brit award-winning singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran usually channels a slogan T-shirts and friendship bracelets look, but he scrubbed up fairly well in this navy suit (whilst also managing to steal Simon Amstell's signature facial expression) Photograph: Luke Macgregor/Reuters

In theory it's a classy floor-length gown with halterneck. In reality, it's shiny, it's studded, it's bronze and it's teamed with elbow length PVC gloves. If Givenchy didn't make this dress with Rihanna in mind then she really has made it her own Photograph: Luke Macgregor/Reuters

Damn! Adele looks smoking in this floor-length Burberry dress. To paraphrase a well-known saying: when you have your look nailed, stick to it. Subtle gowns and statement hair is Adele all over Photograph: Ian West/PA

Wow, Dizzee Rascal looks miffed. Maybe it's the 'my mum bought me supermarket own brand trainers' pattern on his tie? Photograph: Ben Stansall/AFP/Getty Images

Paloma Faith wasn't nominated for anything either, so it was good of her to make a rare public appearance at a private party, event or opening of an envelope in this Aubergine patterned Dolce & Gabbana dress Photograph: Brian Rasic/Rex Features

Lana Del Ray went for a classic, 1950s look to compliment that swept-to-the-side hairdo she does so well. The dress is Vivienne Westwood Photograph: Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images

Tinie Tempah flexes his style muscles as GQ's best dressed man of the year in cream slacks, tasseled slippers and his signature oversized shades. After looking at this picture for a while, what was missing finally became evident: the bow tie has been replaced by a scarf. It's like that moment after adolescence when you realise that maybe the hair braids you got in Majorca aren't 'your thing' and it's time to progress to a grown-up look. Nice one, Tinie Photograph: Brian Rasic/Rex Features

It must be tough being in a boy band like One Direction and having to stick to a wardrobe motif. Did Louis draw the short straw for the trousers with elasticated ankles? Why did Liam have to forgo a jacket? At least it's fair to say the hair product is in healthy supply

Now THIS is how you do female popstar chic. Like Atomic Kitten, the Spice Girls and many more before them, Little Mix have nailed an overall look that combines the deranged with the sublime. Chanel-esque print shorts? Then your bandmate must temper it with ludicrous pink shoes, and so on

Bravo to Emma Bunton for eschewing the Abbey Clancey 'wearing a scrap of lycra to Superdrug' school of sartorial thought by wearing tights. Not only do her pins look nice but she's smiling because she's warm! Photograph: Daniel Deme/EPA
