Dear Doctor, What would you suggest to get me through an exercise class?
I fell off the treadmill in a swish gym. I forgot to concentrate. To keep your cerebellum in shape as well as your gluteus maximus, playlist a ton of songs with daft titles, guaranteed to keep you awake and amused. Try You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly, by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn, Did I Shave My Legs For This? by Deana Carter, Break Like The Wind, by Spinal Tap, or Get Your Tongue Out Of My Mouth I’m Kissing You Goodbye (John Denver’s version is great). My favourite is I Like Bananas Because They Have No Bones, recorded in 1935 by the Hoosier Hot Shots and guaranteed to put some vintage swing into your running.
You can add a little spice to your workout by changing the language. How about a German classic: Alles Hat Ein Ende, Nur Die Wurst Hat Zwei, sung by Hein Müller (Everything has an end, only the sausage has two)? Carrying on with the German comedy tip, try anything by the Comedian Harmonists – a close-harmony male vocal group who were hugely popular before the second world war. The soothing tones of Pierre Bachelet’s Emmanuelle can accompany a French warmdown, while Rodrigo Amarante’s Tardei is perfect for a Portuguese stretch.
The Doctor is never going to recommend techno or EDM (now the rage in America, yawn, 20 years later), since the Doctor had a gutful in the 1990s. But if you fancy something current, pack Sinkane’s new album Mean Love: here’s an artist who effortlessly blends funk rock, free jazz, Krautrock and Sudanese pop. It’s also a lovely break once the oms of your yoga class fall quiet.
