Want to know more about Norwegian black metal, the scene that gave rise to bands such as Mayhem, Burzum and Emperor, and popularised the previously niche pastime of church-burning in mid-90s Norway? Try asking a diplomat.
A representative from Norway's foreign ministry has told newspaper Dagens Næringsliv that its diplomats are now being offered special black metal training:
"We now have 106 foreign service missions and they get many enquiries from people who want information about Norwegian black metal as a phenomenon. In the training programme, we have a large cultural programme in order to give the trainees a good understanding of Norwegian culture and the cultural industry. Black metal is clearly a part of this 'global awakening'."
Black metal was highly controversial in its early days thanks to several high-profile crimes committed by members of the scene. Today, though, it has become a cultural export that Norway is proud of.
Are there any cultural highlights you think your global representatives should be schooled in so they can share them with the wider world?
