Orlando Consort, Huun-Huur-Tu, etc

East Neuk festival, Fife

Though the East Neuk festival has been largely established in the historic churches of the area, an occasional strand has developed of programming quirkier events in unusual locations. This year's festival featured what is certainly its most novel venue to date; a Hardened Aircraft Shelter at RAF Leuchars. Steel and concrete products of cold war paranoia designed to withstand the blast from any known bomb of the time, the shelters are pure 1960s brutalism in appearance; acoustically, however, they boast a five-second reverberation that rivals many a cathedral's. "Close your eyes and you could be in Chartres," promised the recorded introductory presentation on the bus taking the audience on to the base.

In keeping with the cathedral idea, the concert featured the Orlando Consort, which the previous night had performed in St Monans Church. Here they were juxtaposed with the extraordinary voices of Huun-Huur-Tu, a quartet of overtone singers and instrumentalists from the republic of Tuva on the Russian-Mongolian border.

With atmospheric lighting making the most of the structure's architectural features, the setting was certainly dramatic. The much-vaunted acoustic, however, was little in evidence. That Huun-Huur-Tu had been amplified in order for the overtones to carry in the cavernous space was understandable; more questionable was the decision to do the same for the Orlando Consort. The amplification was done sympathetically but it had the inevitable effect of detracting from the natural sound of the venue.
