Phelim O'Neill: Ice Cube stars in a comedy of redemption

At first glance, this looks like another Ice Cube comedy, one in an increasingly long line ignoring a screen persona that alternates between surly and belligerent. Cube and Morgan play two inept losers forced by circumstance and plot contrivances to rob a local church. It soon develops into a hostage situation involving a small collection of parishioners. This is when the movie's true intention rears up. It's not a Cube comedy, but a Jesus movie. Director Talbert has built up quite a reputation creating inspirational DVDs aimed at black America. With his movie debut, Talbert plays to his established audience, the redemption message riding roughshod over everything, even such trifling concerns as character consistency and continuity. Two characters even inexplicably vanish from the proceedings, mid-siege. Who can blame them?
