Neil Spencer

Samuel Yirga: Guzo – review

Neil Spencer enjoys an impressive solo debut from this young Ethiopian pianist

This young pianist from Addis Ababa came to attention with the Ethio-reggae ensemble Dub Colossus, from whom his solo debut draws some influences (it's produced by the group's founder, Nick Page). It's an eclectic affair, however. The twisting melodies of 1960s Ethio-jazz define Abet Abet and The Blues of Wollo (the latter with mesmeric female vocals), while contemplative solo pieces such as Ye Bati Koyita and Drop Me There bear the imprint of heroes such as Herbie Hancock. A cover of Black Gold of the Sun with the Creole Choir of Cuba and a Latin workout, My Head, extend the range of an impressive album.
