Sebastien tells all

The French dance synthetic pop master Sebastien Tellier's new album Sexuality, is out today. As the title subtly suggests it's a pretty explicit ode to, and exploration of, sex and sexuality. The moody electronic album is also produced by one half of Daft Punk, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. But it's the saucy cover art that seems to have got some people a little steamed up, so we had to ask the man himself about it...

Where did the original idea for the artwork come from? I think the first idea for an album's artwork should always come from the ambience of the album, and the ambience of this album is obviously very sexual.

Is that you riding the horse? In my mind, the cover represents sexual adventure. I am riding the horse on the woman's body like Don Quixote. For me sex is like that, sexuality is an adventure, and that's what I wanted to say with my cover.

Were you aiming for something quite kitsch? For me perfection comes from something very deep and something very light. The kitsch you talk about is the sweet side of the record with a lot of sweet colours, but at the same time you have the deeper side, the mind side... and perfection is somewhere between the deep and the superficial. For me it's the rendezvous between the two.

Has the artwork caused a stir back home in France? No. I think in France people we are very comfortable with the nakedness, and I think everybody understands it is not a porn cover. I think in the US we will have the most problems, because in the US markets they have certain rules. But that's OK, I'm comfortable with that, because I live my life on the edge of the rules.
