The trailer alone was enough to stoke anticipation for Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, which stars Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon and boasts appearances from Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson. Now, the crime caper comes with one additional draw – an unreleased Radiohead track.
Out in December, the film adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel was scored by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood – whose movie credits already include There Will Be Blood and The Master. According to Slate’s report from the premiere at the New York film festival, the song itself – Spooks – is a mostly instrumental track which the band previously played live at shows before the release of In Rainbows.
The sound of the track – a febrile frenzy of guitars and drums – is evocative of the band’s earlier work, rather than 2011’s The King of Limbs or Thom Yorke’s various electronic solo ventures since, suggesting that it may just be Greenwood digging out appropriate off-cuts from the archive rather than showcasing any new material from the group’s forthcoming new album.
Never the less, it’s likely to be enough of a lure for Radiohead fans – who are at present waiting for their ninth studio album, which Thom Yorke confirmed on 23 September via Twitter.
Amid Radiohead studio time, frontman Thom Yorke released his latest solo album, entitled Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, via BitTorrent on 26 September. Despite receiving mixed reviews, its unconventional release method seems to have been successful, as BitTorrent Blog reports the bundle – consisting of one free track and a video – was downloaded more than 1m times in the first six days. It is not yet known how many times the full album has been purchased.
