Orquestra Imperial: Fazendo As Pazes Com O Swing review – Old-school samba with surprises

Seven years after their debut, Orquestre Imperial return at last with a beguiling mix of samba and garage-rock, writes Robin Denselow

It has taken Orquestra Imperial seven years to release their second album, despite the popularity of their live shows, but they are back at last, with the same easygoing, gently quirky approach. This Brazilian big band was started as a side-project by the +2 trio – the multi-instrumentalist Alexandre Kassin, percussionist Domenico Lancellotti and singer Moreno Veloso – because they wanted to explore the gafieira samba their grandparents listened to in the 1940s and 50s. They are here joined by 13 other musicians, with seven featured singers including the charmingly laid-back Moreno, Thalma de Freitas and that great veteran Wilson das Neves, who revives the gently swinging A Saudade é Que Me Consola, which he once recorded with the Ipanemas. The old-school samba is matched by surprises such as the wailing guitars and brass of Mocotó em Tijuana, which sounds like vintage Brazilian garage-rock. A cool, entertaining set.
