The meeting that made modern blues took place between two men, Robert Johnson and the devil. In return for his soul, the illusive Delta guitarist secured genius from his more-familiar trading partner. The encounter took place at midnight, and Satan tuned Johnson's guitar at the intersection of two highways, but the particular Mississippi crossroads is disputed – Rosedale, Clarksdale and Dockery all lay claims. Less mystery clouds the meeting of two British teenagers who would wake up white America to the blues it had missed out on. Half-familiar from primary school, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards came together at the nodal point of the North Kent and Bexleyheath lines, on platform 2 at Dartford station. Not as auspicious as the junction of highways 61 and 49, perhaps, but the point will now rightly receive a heritage blue plaque. Until Johnson's crossroads are likewise pinpointed, one is left feeling sympathy for the devil.
