Julian Joseph All Star Big Band
Joseph emerged as a dominant figure of the late-80s British jazz renaissance – first as a formidable Herbie Hancock-inspired pianist, then as a crossover composer, broadcaster and educator. These rare shows by his big band showcase new material and are packed with star soloists, from Peter King to younger innovators such as Soweto Kinch, Empirical's Nathaniel Facey and Jazz Jamaica's Abram Wilson. Brazilian force of nature Hermeto Pascoal, Jerry Dammers's dub-jazz orchestra, Cape Verdean diva Cesária Évora, hip-hop pianist Robert Glasper, Bill Frisell's 858 chamber-group and New York vocalist Gretchen Parlato pack into a 10-day programme. Twenty-one years after recording the folk-rock classic Freedom and Rain, June Tabor and Oysterband are working together again at last. They celebrate the long-awaited release of their album Ragged Kingdom with a London show followed by an 18-date UK tour. The Grammy-winning women's choir return for a UK tour following an appearance at the Barbican's Transcender festival. An international success since the 80s, they are still remarkable for their spine-chilling harmonies and intense, sometimes unearthly vocals. The celebrated blind Malian husband-and-wife team tell their life story at a concert staged entirely in the dark. The hall will be blacked out for a "sensory experience" in which music is mixed with narration, sound effects and "a backdrop of scents". York Hall, London E2 (020-8980 2243), 2-3 November.
