Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was already a giant – in every respect – of qawwali, a form of Sufi devotional singing, when at Peter Gabriel's suggestion he hooked up with musician, composer and producer Michael Brook. The title track of the album they made together, released in late 1990, was subsequently remixed by Massive Attack – and that track became a club hit, testament to the British public's open ears, and a huge influence on a generation of British Asian artists including Nitin Sawhney.
