Between 1960 and 1969 Townsend worked as a photographer for many leading magazines and newspapers both in the UK and abroad. While other photographers took portraits, often closely cropped, Townsend widened his frame to include backgrounds and landscapes, giving viewers a feel for the period, such as in this shot of the Rolling Stones Photograph: Philip Townsend/The Lowry

Townsend is noted for taking the Rolling Stones’ first ever photoshoot, when they were broke, hungry and seeking a record deal. He bought them barbecued chicken, apparently Photograph: Philip Townsend/The Lowry
