Though in many ways this is an appendix to Pierre-Laurent Aimard's cycle of the Beethoven piano concertos with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the COE issued last year, there is no sense of the pianist dominating the breezy and good-humoured account of the Triple Concerto. It is very much a collaborative effort, with notable contributions from violinist Thomas Zehetmair and cellist Clemens Hagen, who take every chance to mould their phrases with great musicality. Aimard does take centre stage in the Choral Fantasy, though, where he invests even the simplest scale passage with real swagger and purpose, while Harnoncourt ensures that this curious, hybrid piece emerges as the most naturally organic structure in the world.
