When his band the Fun Lovin' Criminals had a top 30 hit with Scooby Snacks in 1995, Huey Morgan would have made for an unlikely DJ on BBC Radio 2.

But Radio 2 has long since transformed itself and New York-born Morgan has become an established DJ on the digital sister station, 6 Music.

Now Morgan is to join Radio 2 taking over the Saturday early morning slot vacated by Mark Lamarr.

Morgan will play the eclectic mix of music from the past 60 years with which 6 Music listeners will be familiar, including hip hop, soul, rock and country.

"Radio 2 is the most listened-to radio station in the land, and it's a huge honour to be given three hours a week to kick back and play some of the hottest tunes, both new and old, with a disregard of genre," said Morgan, who will also retain his Sunday afternoon show on 6 Music.

"Growing up in NYC, I could never have imagined that the prestigious and world famous BBC would give me six hours of airtime a week to play my favourite records, and allow me chat to some of the people who have inspired me along the way."

Morgan, who joined 6 Music in 2008, will take over the show, which runs from midnight to 3am on Saturdays, on 2 April next year. In the meantime it will be presented by Bob Harris.

Morgan's fellow 6 Music DJs Jarvis Cocker and Dave Pearce will also make guest appearances on Radio 2 between Christmas and New Year as part of a "6 on 2" series of shows.

Bob Shennan, the controller of Radio 2 and 6 Music, said: "Huey has earned his presenting stripes on 6 Music and his appointment clearly demonstrates Radio 2's fierce commitment to producing a network full of the most diverse music programming available today on UK radio."

Morgan will also continue to present the 6 Music morning weekday show while Lauren Laverne is on maternity leave.
